Peacemaking

Resources and Links

“Blessed are the peacemakers for they will be called the children of God”
(Matthew
5:10)

Peace is not simply the absence of war but “the work of justice and the effect of charity.” (1)(GS78).  It is the work of justice insofar as conflict between peoples and nations so often is the result of political oppression and economic exploitation rooted in lust for power and greed.  The unjust domination of the strong over the weak and of the rich over the poor results in fear and insecurity on the part of the strong and enmity and hatred on the part of the weak. Peace is the effect of charity which replaces oppression with service; greed with generousity; enmity with forgiveness; and hatred with brotherly love.(2) “Christians who take an active part in modern socioeconomic development and defend justice and charity should be convinced that they can make a great contribution to the prosperity of mankind and the peace of the world.”(3)
